Chapter 2

The morning after Malcolm's visit, Shelly sat on the ticket booth steps with the blueprints across her knees and no idea how to begin. She knew rides. She did not know load calculations, glass tolerances, or how to hollow a living cactus without killing it. Every contractor she called had quoted her a number that would empty the park's accounts before the first bolt turned. She was staring at the drawing when Esther's truck rolled through the front gate with a stranger in the passenger seat. Esther climbed out squinting under her straw hat. The passenger followed. He was short and green, wings folded neat against a flowered shirt, tool belt already slung across his hips. "Shelly, this is George," Esther said. "He fixed the freezer at my store last winter when three other people gave up. He builds rides down the coast." George stuck out a hand and grinned. "Heard you're trying to drop people through a cactus. That's the most fun problem I've had all month. Show me what you've got." Shelly walked him to the base of the tallest spire and unrolled the blueprints on an overturned crate. George crouched, traced the glass tube with one finger, then went quiet. He measured the cactus wall with a tape from his belt. He tapped the trunk in three places and listened. When he stood up, the grin was gone. "This won't work," he said. "The tube is centered, but the wall thickness on your drawing is guesswork. A real cactus this size has soft pulp for the first eighteen inches, then fiber. You cut a straight shaft through that and the whole spire splits within a season. First heavy rider, the floor gate torques the frame and the glass shatters inward." He looked at Shelly plainly. "Somebody would die." Shelly felt the drawing go cold under her hands. She had sold the ride to herself, to Esther, and to Malcolm's face, and the paper it stood on was wrong. She rolled the blueprints up. "Then help me fix it. I'll pay what I can now and the rest when we open. Contract today. We close the park tomorrow and start work." George pulled a folded contract template from his tool belt like he had been waiting for the question. They signed on the crate. Esther drove into town to post the closure notice. Shelly stood alone by the spire that evening and watched the last families walk out through the gate. The old blueprint was dead. She had a builder, a shut park, and a countdown that had just gotten shorter.
